What Is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is the Korean art of self defense designed for people of all ages. Literally translated, it means "foot-hand way." Taekwondo's roots date back to over 2000 years with a history rich in Asian philosophy. There is, however, much more to it than kicking and punching. It is designed as a non-violent defensive system, a holistic practice and a way of life. Practitioners can benefit from Taekwondo in a variety of ways: physically, by developing flexibility, good coordination and a strong body. Mentally, by building self-confidence, exercising good judgement and nurturing a sound mind. Philosophically, by learning respect, to help others and to be forthright by embracing the standards espoused by the ancient Oriental classics. .
Taekwondo, therefore, is a traditional martial art, a guide for the formation of outstanding character and a modern sport supported by an ancient philosophy. Taekwondo is currently the fastest growing martial art in the world today. The Chosun Taekwondo Academy takes advantage of this remarkable history and popularity by offering a curriculum steeped in traditional instruction and cultivation of Ki, the internal life force.
